1. Not having a business plan

May be you have heard many people talking about a business plan before actually venturing into any business. Let me tell you that this does not just apply a brick and mortar business only but it also applies to an online business. You certainly need to develop a business plan when you want to start an online business. The business plan lays the road map for starting your business. There are several online free tools that could assist you when you want to start your business online. The business plan helps you to put down all the resources and tools you will require to build your online business.

2. Lack of Focus

Another mistake that many people make is the lack of focus or getting detracted from your business venture because of the noise and hype that is quite common online. It’s critical to focus on your business goals and avoid all the hype that prevails around you. It’s important to recognize that just like a brick and mortar business, an online home based business requires that you do what is normally called market research. I have seen instances where some people put up their online business for sale but unfortunately, you would find them undervaluing this kind of product. As I say, there are several platforms you could check if you want to subcontract people to help you with whatever you want to do online. 6. Ignoring customer service

 One other mistake people make is taking things for grant and not giving customers value for money. Like the brick and mortar business, an online business requires that you provide quality customer service. Failing to do so could result in your online business collapsing. I would urge you to ensure that you take good care of your visitors. For instances, you need to respond to the comments made by your visitors as regularly as you could whether they are making negative remarks or positive remarks. Do not take the comments personal when people comment on your website or blog. It’s important to stay positive at all times.

7. Giving away too much and getting nothing in return

One mistake that people make is giving too much and getting nothing in return. While I agree that content is key in the online business, you should be cautious not to provide too much when you actually don’t get anything in return for your effort. My advice is that you provide a teaser and let your visitors yearn for more from you. When they ask for more then you should over-deliver. There is no free lunch!

8. Spreading yourself too thin on social media marketing

Spreading yourself too thin on social media marketing is a serious is a mistake that could take a lot of your effort and energy. I have seen people advertising or trying to engage their customers on all the social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google plus, Linked In. etc. This can lead to you not making the impact that is required. You need to choose one or two social media platforms and focus on them for more results.

9. Underestimating the drive it takes to succeed

As indicated earlier, there is a lot of hype and fluff about making quick money online.Make it happen This is a serious deception which usually mislead people who are particularly newbies thinking that it’s easy to make money online without much effort. Like any other business, online businesses require sweat and blood before you could get tangible results.

10. Assuming that it is one size fits all

Assuming that it is a one size fits all is another silly mistake that people make online. Some assume that if another person is successful online then they can also easily become successful too. Some also believe that if you use the same online platform then you could also be successful. They tend to overlook the geographical locations, financial inputs, and other resources required to make the business profitable.
